Despite reaching the UEFA Champions League final, Borussia Dortmund will be hoping for a much stronger domestic showing this term after recording a fifth-placed Bundesliga finish last season - their lowest since 2014/15. That perhaps provided the catalyst for Dortmund to promote Nuri Şahin from assistant to head coach to replace Edin Terzić, part of a summer of upheaval which saw the departures of club legends Marco Reus and Mats Hummels amongst other notable transfers.

Dortmund’s adoring fans will hope Şahin has what it takes to win this league as a manager after doing so as a player under Jürgen Klopp back in 2011. Beginning with a win against Eintracht Frankfurt is the first stop on Dortmund’s road to redemption, and they had to come from behind to win 3-1 in the latest meeting between the clubs, although that marked their sixth straight unbeaten H2H, last losing against Frankfurt back in 2021 (W5, D1).

There are few stronger games to make up the first Saturday primetime TV slot of the season than a Bundesliga fixture which has been played 102 times, dating back to the league’s inception in 1963 (FRA: W31, D21, L50). Just one place separated the Eagles from their hosts last term, but the massive 16-point gap between the pair perhaps paints a picture of the gulf in class between Germany’s Champions League and Europa League level sides.

That gulf could be evident here as Frankfurt endured a four-game winless run of Bundesliga away games to end last season. Such barren streaks on the road aren’t exactly alien, with Frankfurt enduring over an 11-month wait for an away win between November 2022 and October 2023.

Players to watch: Dortmund’s Maximilian Beier is set to make his debut after his move from Hoffenheim, and he could be eyeing a quick impact after each of his final six goals for his previous club came before half-time. Frankfurt opted to make Hugo Ekitiké’s loan move from PSG permanent after directly contributing to six in 14 league games last season (G4, A2), and he made the perfect start to this campaign by scoring twice in the Eagles’ DFB-Pokal win last week.

Hot stat: Eight of the last nine Dortmund-held H2Hs produced over 3.5 total goals.
