Brighton made the perfect start to life under Fabian Hürzeler, with a dominant 3-0 win over Everton seeing them spend the week on top of the Premier League table. The 31-year-old German described it as a “perfect result” and the club have followed that up by adding Georginio Rutter to the squad, arriving for £40 million from Leeds on Monday to further bolster an already talented squad.
Hürzeler will now look to replicate his predecessor Roberto De Zerbi, who guided Brighton to back-to-back three-goal wins to start the previous league campaign. That would require a marked improvement on the miserable form the Seagulls ended last season with at the Amex Stadium, which saw them lose four of their final five Premier League games on their own turf (W1). They even failed to score in each of those defeats, one of which came on the final day against upcoming opponents Manchester United.
Prior to that result, Brighton became just the third side in Premier League history to win four consecutive H2Hs against Man Utd. Three of those defeats came under the guidance of Erik ten Hag, but the Dutchman went some way to relieving the pressure on his shoulders by winning 1-0 on the opening day against Fulham, a result that he says gives his side “a foundation to build on”.
The next challenge for Ten Hag is to win his opening away league game of the season, something he failed to do in his first two campaigns at United (L2), with both defeats coming ‘to nil’. That’s been a long standing problem for the Red Devils, who won their opening away match in the Premier League just once in the previous six attempts (D2, L3), although the single victory did come against Brighton in 2020/21!
Players to watch: Man Utd academy graduate Danny Welbeck has remarkably now scored in each of the last 15 Premier League seasons! He’ll look to back up netting on the opening day by hitting the target against his boyhood club, something he’s done five times previously. Standing in a place once occupied by Welbeck is Joshua Zirkzee, who followed in the footsteps of legendary Dutch strikers Ruud van Nistelrooy and Robin van Persie by scoring decisively against Fulham on his Old Trafford debut.
Hot streak: Each of the last four H2Hs at the Amex Stadium saw only one side score on the day.
