After grinding out a 1-1 draw courtesy of a late equaliser on the opening day, Bournemouth have since been buoyed by the £40.2m club record signing of striker Evanilson. Fans are probably breathing a sigh of relief as the large gap that Dominic Solanke’s departure left was swiftly filled, giving the Cherries the best possible chance of opening their home campaign on a high note by extending their unbeaten league H2H streak against Newcastle to five games (W1, D3).

Returning to the Vitality Stadium should be a boost for Andoni Iraola’s men in that regard, especially seeing as they’ve not lost any of their last four opening home Premier League games (W2, D2). Curiously enough, each of Bournemouth’s last five home campaign openers in the top-flight produced exactly two match goals, whilst the last two home H2Hs also ended with 1-1 and 2-0 (W1, D1).

Unlike their hosts, the transfer window has been something of a slow burner for Newcastle, who retain hopes of doing more business in the run up to this game and the short remaining time before it slams shut. Aside from off-field frustration, Eddie Howe’s men got their league campaign off to a winning start with a backs-to-the-wall 1-0 victory over Southampton, despite a controversial red card for Fabian Schär which left the Magpies shorthanded throughout and defensively light for this clash.

The travelling faithful would do well to forget about their opening Premier League trips across the last three seasons, as they failed to win, or even score, in any of those outings (D1, L2). Despite the negative omens, Newcastle remain favourites for this clash, although one may take that short price with a grain of salt as Newcastle won just 36% of their away league games as pre-match favourites during 2023/24 (W4, D2, L5).

Players to watch: After scoring 25 goals for Porto last term, Brazilian international striker Evanilson is set for his Cherries debut here - only one of his goalscoring appearances last season ended in defeat (W15, D3). For Newcastle, Anthony Gordon will hope to bag a goal against Bournemouth for a second straight season - last season’s H2H strike was one of six team opening goals he scored in 2023/24.

Hot stat: Bournemouth have failed to win seven of their last eight home league games as pre-match betting outsiders (W1, D3, L4).
