Two teams meet here looking to bounce back from underwhelming starts to their Premier League campaigns. Tottenham Hotspur travelled to Leicester City and did leave with a point following a 1-1 draw, but boss Ange Postecoglou was blunt in his post-match assessment, labelling the result “disappointing” after such a dominant opening 45 minutes from his side. Spurs’ record of five wins from their past six maiden home league games (L1) of the season should inspire confidence that they can put that result behind them.

The one loss in that run, as it happens, came against upcoming opponents Everton (1-0), then flying high and managed by Carlo Ancelotti. The Toffees have suffered a fall from grace since then though and Tottenham have tended to make light work of facing them. The capital club are unbeaten in seven league H2Hs since, adding to an impressive overall record of one defeat in the last 23 Premier League clashes between these two (W11, D11).

Everton’s start to league action this term was a disaster, with manager Sean Dyche labelling their 3-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion a “horrible game” as he saw his side have a goal ruled out for offside, a penalty overturned by VAR and a red card shown to defender Ashley Young. As a result, the Merseysiders finished the opening round bottom of the table, and a record of no win in the month of August since 2021 (D3, L6) doesn’t suggest they’ll necessarily climb away from that position this weekend.

That point particularly rings true when taking into account Everton’s torrid away record so far in 2024. After signing off in 2023 with four wins from their final six Premier League matches on the road, Dyche’s men have yet to secure three points on their travels this calendar year (D4, L5), scoring just once on their three trips to London in that time (D1, L2).

Players to watch: Former Toffee Richarlison is struggling for form, but his last two Spurs goalscoring appearances each came on Merseyside - a consolation at Anfield in May and a double at Goodison Park in February. Scorer in Everton’s last win here in 2021, Dominic Calvert-Lewin bagged two of his opening three league goals last season in London to help secure victories at Brentford (3-1) and West Ham (1-0).

Hot stat: Tottenham have scored more Premier League goals against Everton than against any other side (102).
