The marquee fixture of the Premier League’s return after the international break unquestionably takes place in North London, as Tottenham and Arsenal clash for the 65th time in competition history (TOT: W15, D25, L24). It’s been a difficult start to the campaign for Ange Postecoglou’s men (W1, D1, L1), but with Dominic Solanke and Micky van de Ven set to return from injury on Sunday, perhaps they can start to kick on from here.

And there’s no game in which the fans would be more appreciative, as Spurs have endured misery in the North London derby of late, winning just one of the last seven (D1, L5). A repeat of that solitary stalemate certainly appears unlikely, as none of Tottenham’s last 22 Premier League home games ended all square (W15, L7) - a run that stretches back to April 2023!

More cautious Arsenal fans may not be too upset with such an outcome here given their selection problems. Mikel Arteta, who agreed a new three-year contract in the build-up to this clash, could be without as many as six of his first-team squad thanks to injury and suspension - most notably Declan Rice, who was sent off against Brighton two weeks ago, and captain Martin Ødegaard, who sustained an ankle injury while on international duty with Norway.

This looks set to be the first real test of the Gunners’ squad depth as they look to end their wait for a Premier League title that spans two decades. There’s seemingly no better place for Arsenal to face that test than the road, as they’re unbeaten in away league action since the start of 2024 (W9, D1), with eight games in that sequence seeing them keep a clean sheet.

Players to watchJames Maddison’s first taste of the North London derby came in a 2-2 draw last September in which he assisted both of his side’s goals, but none of his last five H2Hs against the Gunners ended in victory (D1, L4). Arsenal will turn to Bukayo Saka for inspiration as he scored in both derbies in the Premier League last season, though all three of his defeats to Spurs (W5, D1) have come on this ground.

Hot stat: This fixture has seen both teams score more than any other in Premier League history (43), with five of the last seven H2Hs seeing both sides on the scoresheet.
