After a run to the semi-finals of the Conference League last season, Club Brugge are back in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) for the sixth time in seven campaigns. A home game on matchday one is exactly what the Belgian champions would’ve wanted since they were unbeaten at the Jan Breydel Stadium in Europe last season (W6, D3),

Brugge have also won each of their last four league matches, but the home faithful will be wary as they head into the main draw of the UCL where they’ve won just three of their last 20 home games (D6, L11). Last season’s finalists Borussia Dortmund coming to town is therefore a daunting fixture, especially as they’ve failed to win seven of their last nine matches against German opposition on home soil (D2, L5).

After coming so close to European glory in May, Dortmund must go again in the UCL where they’ll face the side that beat them in the final, Real Madrid, later on in the league phase. New boss Nuri Şahin will take charge of a side in the UCL for the first time here, but he’s boosted by overseeing an unbeaten start to the season domestically (W3, D1).

Despite that, performances have been far from perfect for the Black and Yellows, who are gearing up for a ninth successive season in the UCL. Key to success in the league phase could well depend on their away form which has been found wanting in Europe in recent years, as Dortmund have won just 11 of their last 35 European away games (D7, L17).

Key battle: Club Brugge goalkeeper Simon Mignolet could be in for a long night since he’s never kept a clean sheet and conceded ten goals in four prior games against Dortmund, including a pair of 3-0 defeats in this competition four years ago. Looking to take advantage of any early nerves will be Karim Adeyemi, who gets into his work quickly since eight of his last 11 club goals have come before half-time.

Hot streak: Dortmund have avoided defeat and kept a clean sheet in their last four games against Club Brugge, all of which came in the UCL (W3, D1).
