After missing out on UEFA competitions altogether last season due to a violation of financial regulations, Juventus return to European football’s top table against PSV at the Allianz Stadium. In spite of the two clubs enjoying proud histories - and both being crowned European champions in the 1980s - this will be their first-ever H2H, but the Bianconeri should be confident given their historically strong record against Dutch opposition (W9, D7, L6).

For head coach Thiago Motta, who joined from Bologna in June, this game sees him lead a side in European competition for the first time. He’s had an impressive start to his tenure, with Juve remaining unbeaten in his first four outings without conceding a single goal (W2, D2), but he needs his team to find their shooting boots after drawing blanks in their last two games.

With five straight wins - in which they’ve scored 20 goals and conceded just three - PSV have picked up where they left off last season when they broke the record for the most points in an Eredivisie season. A trip to Turin is likely to be a big step up in the quality of opposition, and history is against them too as they have won on only two of their previous visits to Italy (D4, L7) most recently in December 2012 against Napoli.

Head coach Peter Bosz has his own personal demons to banish at Europe’s top table, as he’s lost both prior H2Hs against Juventus in the UCL, while he’s won just two of his ten away matches in the competition (D2, L6). Having led PSV to the knockout stages last season, a fast start may be essential for the Dutch champions as they’ll also face PSG and Liverpool later on in the league phase.

Players to watch: Samuel Mbangula has emerged from nowhere for Juventus, directly contributing to three goals in his first two senior appearances (G1, A2) - both of which saw the Old Lady lead 2-0 at half-time and go on to win 3-0. Luuk de Jong scored eight times across last season’s UCL, but the PSV striker has not scored an away goal outside of the qualifying rounds in the competition since the 2018/19 season!.

Hot streak: PSV have failed to score before half-time in their last five UCL matches (W1, D2, L2).
