An underwhelming start to Real Sociedad’s La Liga campaign (W1, D1, L2), and the departure of Mikel Merino to Arsenal, has been compounded by a series of injuries to key players. Mikel Oyarzabal is the latest to join a growing list of sidelined players ahead of a busy month in which they will also begin their UEFA Europa League campaign against Nice.

Right now, they must focus on the visit of Real Madrid, for which they start as outsiders after winning only one of the last five H2Hs here (D1, L3) and losing their last three home league games. Not since early 2007 have they lost four consecutive La Liga fixtures on their own turf, but a potentially ominous sign is that one of those defeats was inflicted by their next visitors!

David Beckham was on the scoresheet for Real Madrid that day, and with their current English poster boy Jude Bellingham back in training, things are looking up for the reigning La Liga champions on the injury front. Problems remain at the back with Éder Militão and David Alaba sidelined as Carlo Ancelotti’s side look to build on a slow start to their title defence (W2, D2).

Those draws both came away from home, making this Los Blancos’ first campaign since 2012/13 in which they’ve failed to win either of their first two league road fixtures. Their good record here suggests they’ll soon get off the mark, while their current undefeated run in La Liga fixtures away from the Bernabéu now stands at 17 matches (W10, D7).

Players to watch: Sociedad’s Umar Sadiq has scored all four of his goals since joining the club between the 20th and 60th minute, while all four were the game’s second goal. Upset at not being nominated for the Ballon d’Or, Real Madrid’s Rodrygo may feel he has a point to prove and could be dangerous early on given four of his last five club goals arrived before the 15th minute.

Hot stat: The away side on the day has kept a first-half clean sheet in nine of the last ten H2Hs (Real Madrid: W5, D3, L2).123
