After a routine 2-0 win over Leicester last week, mid-table Fulham are chasing their first set of back-to-back Premier League victories since November when they welcome Manchester United to Craven Cottage. Inconsistency continues to hold Marco Silva’s men back from challenging for Europe, so this is a fixture that certainly doesn’t bode well on paper as they’ve won just one of the last 18 Premier League H2Hs (D3, L14).
The Cottagers are a tough side to beat on their own turf though, avoiding defeat in each of their last five home league games, albeit the last four ended in draws. Fulham have never previously experienced a run of five consecutive Premier League draws at Craven Cottage, and Silva will expect to improve on his own poor record against the Red Devils (W3, D1, L8) given that they sit seven points above them in the table.
They’ll certainly be more rested than Manchester United, who battled to a 2-1 win over Rangers in Europe on Thursday thanks to a 92nd-minute winner from Bruno Fernandes. That made it three wins from four matches across all competitions for Ruben Amorim’s men (L1), but the nature of their 3-1 defeat to Brighton in the Premier League last week means the pressure has hardly lifted on his squad.
With increasing reports that Alejandro Garnacho could depart the club to help the club meet the Premier League’s financial regulations, Amorim may be glad to hear the first whistle in the capital on Sunday night. That feeling may not last long given that United have conceded first in eight of their last nine league matches, though a comeback could hardly be ruled out considering that they’ve won each of their last seven league visits to Fulham.
Players to watch: Midfielder Saša Lukić is only one yellow card away from bringing up ten for the season - only two Fulham players have previously done so in a Premier League season. Buoyed by his goal on Thursday, Fernandes will look to add to his four career goals against Fulham, one of which was decisive in last season’s corresponding fixture.
Hot stat: Man Utd have lost six of their last nine Premier League games (W2, D1) - they’ve not had a run of seven in ten within the same season in the competition’s history.
