Table-topping PSG return to Ligue 1 action after a pair of cup encounters that first saw them require penalties to get past Lens in the Coupe de France, before heading over to Doha to claim their third successive French Super Cup with a 1-0 win over Monaco. Those wins made it five consecutive competitive victories for Luis Enrique’s men, putting them in good stead to at least maintain their healthy lead atop of Ligue 1.
The Parisians will be keen on capitalizing on this fine momentum, but that’s not guaranteed given they’ve won just one of their last five league matches to open a calendar year (D3, L1). The Parc des Princes faithful will see the arrival of St Étienne as a godsend then, considering PSG have won 31 of their last 35 Ligue 1 home games (D4) against newly promoted opposition.
The visitors endured a tragic end to 2024 when suffering three straight league losses and an elimination from the Coupe de France - a run that ultimately saw them go on the hunt for a new manager. Eirik Horneland was then appointed, and with his arrival came instant reprieve as St Étienne began the new year with a 3-1 Ligue 1 win over Reims to lift themselves out of the bottom-three heading into this weekend.
A trip to the league-leaders is quite the baptism of fire for Horneland’s first away game in charge, especially since he’s adopting a team who have picked up just one point in their eight away league games this campaign. He’ll also have to deal with their shortfalls when facing title-lifting opposition, seeing as they’ve failed to win any of their last 17 Ligue 1 matches against a reigning top-flight champion (D5, L12).
Players to watch: Ousmane Dembélé has displayed some fine form by netting four goals in his most recent four games, the last two of which saw him register the closing goal of the game. He’ll face competition from Augustine Boakye, who came back from injury with two second-half goals against Monaco, resulting in each of his last six strikes coming after half-time.
Hot stat: PSG have been leading at half-time (11) and St Étienne have been trailing at half-time (ten) more than any other teams in Ligue 1 this season.
THE MATCH WILL BE LIVE FIVE (5) BEFORE KICK OFF
