CAF Champions League Table Summary
Basics
- Teams: The group stage features 16 teams, the winners of the earlier qualifying rounds of the CAF Champions League.
- Groups: These teams are divided into four groups of four teams each.
- Round-Robin Format: Each team plays every other team in its group twice (once at home and once away), resulting in a total of six matches per team.
How Points Determine the Group Table
Points System: Teams are awarded points for their match results:
- Win: 3 points
- Draw: 1 point
- Loss: 0 points
Ranking: Teams within each group are ranked based on total points from highest to the lowest.
Tiebreakers
If two or more teams are tied on points, the following tiebreakers are used to determine positions:
- Head-to-Head Results: Results from direct matches between the tied teams. The team with the better record (more points, better goal difference) in head-to-head matches gets the higher rank.
- Goal Difference: The overall difference between goals scored and goals allowed during all group matches.
- Goals Scored: The total number of goals scored throughout all group matches.
- Away Goals Scored: If teams remain tied, away goals scored in the matches between the tied teams are used.
- Drawing of lots: A random draw is used as a last resort if teams cannot be separated by other tiebreakers.
Qualification for the Knockout Stage
- Top Two: The top two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals, which begins the knockout phase of the tournament.
