UEFA Champions League Table Summary

Basics

  • Teams: The group stage features 32 teams from top European leagues.
  • Groups: These teams are divided into eight groups containing four teams each (Groups A-H).
  • Round-Robin Format: Each team plays every other team in its group twice (once home and once away), resulting in a total of six matches per team.

How Points Determine the Group Table

  • Points System: Teams get points based on their match results:

    • Win: 3 points
    • Draw: 1 point
    • Loss: 0 points
  • Ranking: Teams within each group are ordered from highest to lowest points.

Tiebreakers

If two or more teams are tied on points, the following tiebreakers are used to determine their ranking:

  1. Head-to-Head Results: The results from direct matches between the tied teams take priority. The team with the better record (more points, better goal difference) in head-to-head matches ranks higher.
  2. Goal Difference: The overall difference between goals scored and goals allowed in all group matches.
  3. Goals Scored: The total number of goals scored in all group matches.
  4. Away Goals Scored: The total number of goals scored away from home in all group matches.
  5. Wins: The number of matches won in all group matches.
  6. Away Wins: The number of matches won away from home in all group matches.
  7. Disciplinary Points: A system of deductions for yellow and red cards (fair play points).
  8. UEFA Club Coefficient: A ranking based on a team's performance in European competitions over the past five years.

Qualification for the Knockout Stage

  • Top Two: The top two teams from each group advance to the Round of 16 (the knockout stage of the tournament).
  • Europa League: The third-placed team in each group moves on to the knockout phase of the UEFA Europa League.
