Heading into this weekend, newly-promoted Ipswich are one of six teams yet to have won a Premier League game this season. And if the Tractor Boys fail to get three points against Aston Villa on Sunday, it would mark their seventh match without a victory in all competitions - which would be their worst run since September 2021!

What should give Ipswich hope is the fact that since facing and losing to Liverpool and Manchester City in their opening two games of the campaign, they have avoided defeat in the top-flight, conceding no more than one goal in draws against Fulham, Brighton and Southampton. However, their recent record against upcoming opponents Aston Villa leaves a lot to be desired, having won just one of the last 14 H2Hs (D3, L10).

Villa, meanwhile, have maintained the feelgood factor from last term and are once again mixing it with the Premier League’s elite. Their tally of 12 points from a possible 15 is their joint-best beginning to a campaign after five games since 1998/99, though they only managed a sixth place finish that year.

Manager Unai Emery will be targeting an improvement from his side defensively, as they haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last ten league matches since stunning title-chasing Arsenal in April. However, Villa have kept their fans richly entertained in recent months, with eight of their last nine games having featured at least three goals, though that’s only been the case in two of the last six H2Hs.

Players to watch: Leif Davis provided an incredible 21 assists for Ipswich last season, and he got his first at Premier League level against Fulham - he hasn’t been on the losing side in the last eight matches in which he has set up a goal (W5, D3). Emiliano Buendia marked his first Villa start since May 2023 with a goal against Wycombe in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night, and he will no doubt be looking forward to this encounter, as he registered two assists during his last meeting with Ipswich when playing for East Anglian rivals Norwich City.

Hot stat: Villa’s opponents on the day have received the first yellow card in five of their last six games.
