The first big derby of the 2024/25 La Liga season sees city rivals Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid clash with both sides trying to keep pace with early leaders Barcelona. After Thursday’s 1-0 win over Celta Vigo, the hosts found themselves two points behind their visitors (W4, D3) going into the 237th edition of ‘Derbi Madrileño’ (Atlético: W59, D61, L116).

But after winning the corresponding fixture 3-1 last term, Los Colchoneros might feel confident of another victory as Diego Simeone’s side have started well at home and are yet to concede in La Liga fixtures here this term (W2, D1). They have also lost only one of their last nine competitive home games (W7, D1), scoring at least twice in three of their four to take place this season (W3, D1).

Real Madrid surged into a three-goal lead against Alavés on Tuesday but they had to see out an uncomfortable final few minutes after conceding twice late in the game (W 3-2). Manager Carlo Ancelotti was happy enough with what happened before the late drama, praising his “improving team” that also remains unbeaten in La Liga this term (W5, D2)

They’ve won just one of the last five H2Hs (D2, L2), so the news that Kylian Mbappé faces time on the sidelines with a thigh injury is a major blow ahead of the derby and a return to the venue at which Los Blancos suffered their most recent league loss (W11, D7 on the road since). The Metropolitano is one of the few places at which the reigning La Liga champions have struggled recently, winning just one of their last six visits (D2, L3).

Players to watch: Atlético’s Julián Alvarez knows what it’s like to beat Real, having scored in a 4-0 win while playing for Manchester City in May 2023. His last four club goals all arrived after the 80th minute. With Mbappé absent, Rodrygo could take on extra attacking duties, particularly as he has contributed to one goal in each of Madrid’s last three games (G2, A1) with both goals coming after half-time.

Hot stat: Only one of the last 11 H2Hs was goalless at half-time (Atlético HT: W5, D3, L3).
