It’s been an expectedly difficult start to life as a Bundesliga side for Holstein Kiel, whose debut season in the competition has begun with two defeats from two outings. That said, Kiel are set to become the 56th side that the 33-time champions have played in the Bundesliga, with Energie Cottbus proving the last team to actually beat them in their first meeting in October 2000.
As for Vincent Kompany’s visiting Bayern Munich, they’ve made a 100% winning start to this latest German top-flight campaign as they look to wrestle the title back from Bayer Leverkusen. Just before the international break, they overcame Freiburg 2-0 at the Allianz Arena, a much more straightforward result than their 3-2 opening-day win at Wolfsburg.
That particular victory acted as just their third across their last nine league matches away from home (D1, L5) and that’ll be something that Kompany & co want to improve further upon here, but considering that the Bavarians have conceded 2.55 goals on average during that streak, that could be easier said than done despite their heavy favourites tag!
Key battle: Holstein Kiel’s Fiete Arp comes up against his former side here and if he scores an upset could be on the cards, given that all four of his league goalscoring appearances last season ended in victory for his side. So far in his Bundesliga career, Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has beaten all 36 sides he’s faced at least once and with victory against Kiel, he would become the first player in competition history to come out victorious against 37 different teams.
Hot stat: Holstein Kiel haven’t seen any of their home league games finish 0-0 since April 2018. 123
