The first Derby della Madonnina of the season takes centre stage this Sunday as Inter Milan host city rivals and fellow San Siro tenants, AC Milan. Reigning champions Inter confirmed their 20th Scudetto with a win over their neighbours back in April, and a sold out crowd will watch as they look to build on a promising UEFA Champions League draw against English champions Manchester City during the week (0-0).
On the domestic front, Inter remain unbeaten (W2, D2), with wins ‘to nil’ in both of their home league games so far this season. The Nerrazzuri’s title defence can take another step forward with a seventh-straight win over the Rossoneri, with their current six-game winning run in the derby representing their longest such streak in the fixture’s storied 115-year history.
AC Milan also began their European campaign during the week, although a 3-1 defeat against Liverpool despite scoring first must have left a bitter taste. That loss was compounded by an injury to first choice goalkeeper Mike Maignan, and it appears that 19 year-old Lorenzo Torriani is set to start. With a mixed start to their league campaign (W1, D2, L1), huge question marks remain over the chances of Paulo Fonseca’s men here.
Fonseca is yet to beat Inter Milan after four personal H2H meetings (D3, L1), although they were often exciting games with three seeing goals from both teams and four goals in total. Managerial H2Hs aside, the Milan derby often produces a quick start with each of the last nine Serie A H2Hs seeing a goal before half-time, although it was AC Milan who conceded before the break in each of the last eight, no matter who the ‘hosts’ were.
Players to watch: Inter centre-back Francesco Acerbi played a huge role in their European clean sheet in midweek and he also scored first in the last Milan derby, meaning all three of his goals last season were match-opening headers. For AC, Christian Pulisic has contributed to four league goals already this season (G2, A2) and five of his last eight competitive scoring appearances saw him record his team’s first goal.
Hot stat: AC Milan are unbeaten in each of the last seven Milan derbies that were played on matchday five of a Serie A campaign (W5, D2).
