Arsenal are on a roll at the moment, beating PSG 2-0 in midweek UEFA Champions League action after last weekend’s 4-2 Premier League win over Leicester to make manager Mikel Arteta “super happy”. Next on the agenda is climbing to the top of the league table, as the Gunners trail Liverpool and Manchester City despite remaining unbeaten this season (W4, D2).
The chances of them falling further behind appear slim, as Arsenal haven’t lost a top-flight home H2H against Southampton since 1987 (W19, D9)! An active 40-match unbeaten run against promoted sides at the Emirates Stadium (W35, D5) means the home faithful will be confident, and that faith is built on solid defensive foundations as no side in Europe’s traditional top-five leagues can match their 17 clean sheets across all competitions in 2024.
Southampton are certainly up against it and head north following disappointment against local rivals Bournemouth (L 3-1) on Monday night amid their joint-worst six-game start to a top-flight campaign (D1, L5). Manager Russell Martin said he “didn’t recognise” his team in a damning post-match reaction, and is facing calls to ring the changes with only Wolves below them in the Premier League table.
Having watched their side suffer six consecutive top-flight defeats on the road - conceding at least three times in five of them - Saints fans won’t make the trip to the capital with much optimism, although their most recent Premier League away point did come at Arsenal (D 3-3, April 2023). And they do pose a threat on their travels, having scored in their last four competitive away matches (W2, L2).
Players to watch: Leandro Trossard has returned from suspension with a direct goal contribution in each of his last two games (G1, A1) - Arsenal have won each of his last 12 league goalscoring appearances for them - nine of them to nil. Given the hosts’ set-piece excellence, Southampton centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis will need to be on his mettle, but he is also useful going forward, having netted four of his last five senior goals via headers.
Hot streak: Arsenal haven’t trailed at the break in a home Premier League game so far this calendar year (HT: W8, D4).
