Manchester City's struggles continued on Saturday with a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, marking just one win in their last 12 matches across all competitions (D2, L9). This also extended their run to four consecutive games where they have conceded multiple goals (D1, L3). Currently sitting at the bottom of the form table for the last eight Premier League matches (W1, D1, L6), City, who have won the past four Premier League titles, find themselves outside the top six at Christmas.

Pep Guardiola’s side now faces Everton on Boxing Day, presenting a crucial opportunity for a turnaround. City have an impressive record against the Toffees, going unbeaten in their last 15 encounters (W13, D2), with three clean sheets in the last four meetings at home. However, after a 2-1 loss to Manchester United last week, City could suffer back-to-back home league defeats for the first time since May 2021.

Everton have shown resilience in recent matches, drawing goalless with both Arsenal and Chelsea. These clean sheets contribute to their solid defensive form, with five shutouts in their last six league games (W1, D4, L1). Despite being four points clear of the relegation zone, Everton still struggle in attack, having scored only 14 goals in the Premier League—fewer than all but Southampton.

While Everton have become tough to break down, manager Sean Dyche will be under pressure to turn more of those draws into victories, especially on the road. The Toffees have won just one away league match in over a year (D7, L11).

Key players to watch include Erling Haaland, who has been out of form recently with just one goal in his last six appearances, but has a strong record against Everton, scoring four goals in three previous meetings, including three at the Etihad. Everton’s Idrissa Gana Gueye, who recently made his 200th Premier League start, provided the assist for Everton’s last goal at the Etihad in 2022.

Stat to note: Six of the last eight December meetings between these teams have seen both sides score.
