AC Milan return to UEFA Champions League (UCL) action looking to shake off the disappointment of a costly league defeat away to Juventus this past weekend (2-0) that ended a run of eight competitive games without a defeat (W5, D3). But under Sérgio Conceição for the first time in the competition, Milan should be confident of bouncing back and claiming what would be their fifth successive UCL win.

In addition to picking up three key points in the race for automatic last-16 qualification, Milan will be hoping to repeat the two previous occasions in which they won five-straight UCL games, as they went on to reach the competition’s final in both seasons. While there’s still a long way to go to replicate that feat, the Serie A outfit come into this encounter having won each of their past two games against La Liga sides.

Girona also travel on the back of a domestic defeat - losing 2-1 at home to Sevilla - which makes it just two victories in nine competitive games for the Spanish outfit (D1, L6). They now face a battle to secure more continental football next season, finishing the last La Liga round eighth in the table. They’re also five points adrift of the 24 UCL knockout places coming into the round, meaning it’s likely to only be pride to play for in these final two rounds.

The issues for Girona in Europe’s top-tier competition is highlighted by the fact that they’ve lost each of their last three UCL games without scoring a single goal - another such outcome here would make them the first side to lose their first four such games without scoring since SK Rapid Wien between 1996 and 2005.

Players to watch: Milan’s Tammy Abraham scored in each of his last two UCL appearances for Milan and he could become only the second Englishman to score in three in a row for a non-English club after Jude Bellingham. Defender Arnau Martinez has endured a forgettable UCL campaign, not featuring in either of Girona’s past two European matches after a red card against Sturm Graz in November, but will hope to fix that here with the confidence behind him of two goal contributions (G1, A1) in three La Liga matches.

Hot stat: None of the last three Milan bosses have won their opening UCL game in charge of the club.
