William Saliba is the latest Arsenal player forced to the sidelines by injury, and his teammates certainly felt his absence as they squandered a two-goal lead to draw with Aston Villa on Saturday. Manager Mikel Arteta slammed his backline, saying they were “nowhere near the standards” they’ve set for themselves. His rearguard has kept a UEFA Champions League (UCL) high seven home clean sheets since the start of last season, but managed just one in their last nine games across all competitions.

The Gunners should be confident of steadying the ship in the UCL as they look to tighten their grip on a top-eight position (W4, D1, L1). Arteta’s men are yet to concede a goal from open play in the competition this season, while they also boast the most UCL home wins since the start of last season (seven) - ominous statistics for upcoming opponents Dinamo Zagreb.

The Croatians are unsurprisingly big underdogs as they desperately cling onto a place in the knockout play-off positions. This will be Dinamo’s first competitive game in a month, but their winter break came at a good time as they had won just one of their previous eight matches across all competitions before the pause (D4, L3).

That prompted a high-profile managerial appointment, with Nenad Bjelica replaced by Ballon d’Or winning Italian defender Fabio Cannavaro in the dugout. He’s tasked with guiding Dinamo to a first-ever away win against English opposition in the UCL (D1, L3), but his squad may retain quiet confidence since they’ve won their last two road matches in this competition - more than they managed in their first 25 such outings in this competition (W1, D3, L21).

Players to watch: Bukayo Saka has been involved in 14 of Arsenal’s 30 UCL goals over the last two season (G8, A6), but his absence has presented an opportunity for Gabriel Martinelli - the Gunners are unbeaten in the last 38 matches he’s scored in (W32, D6). For the visitors, Sandro Kulenović has already netted three UCL away goals this term, second only to Jamie Gittens pre-round. If he manages one more, he’ll tie his club’s all-time record for away goals in one season in major European competition.

Hot stat: Arsenal have won their last two UCL matches by 2+ goal margins, they’ve never done so in three successive games in this competition.
