There’s still so much on the line for Feyenoord going into the final two rounds of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) league phase, with the Dutch outfit sat in the play-off places, both just three points clear of elimination and three points shy of the automatic last-16 qualification. They come into this game after a disappointing 1-1 draw with mid-table Willem II at the weekend, leaving them fourth in the Eredivisie and fighting to secure UCL football next season.
But their form in this competition is strong, with just one defeat across their past five UCL encounters (W3, D1). They’ve been a great watch for neutrals, scoring 14 goals in their last six European games - their most in a season in this competition since 1999/00. The fun nature of their contests is further highlighted by the fact no side’s UCL games this season have seen more total goals (29), and they could become one of only three teams to have both scored and conceded 15+ goals in their first seven UCL matches of a season.
Bayern Munich’s visit certainly promises goals as they’ve won each of their last five matches across all competitions, scoring 20 times in the process. Vincent Kompany’s red-hot side arrive in the Netherlands with work still to do, as their poor start to this campaign means they start the round a point adrift of the top-eight.
Boosting the feel-good factor in the away camp will be Bayern’s standout form against Dutch opponents, with no defeat in any of the last eight UCL games against such sides (W4, D4), albeit failing to win the last two. These two sides haven’t met since way back in 2001/02 though, when Bayern went unbeaten across both clashes (W1, D1).
Players to watch: Feyenoord’s Santiago Giménez could become the first player to score 11 goals in European football for the club since Jon Dahl Tomasson back in 2002. Should he feature, this will be opposite number Harry Kane’s 50th UCL appearance, he’s not scored in the competition since Bayern’s 4-1 defeat to Barcelona in October - yet he still boasts a standout record (G34).
Hot stat: Bayern have conceded first in five of their last six UCL away games (W1, D1, L4).
