Real Madrid have been prolific since losing the Spanish Super Cup final to Barcelona, beating Celta Vigo 5-2 in the Copa del Rey and Las Palmas 4-1 in La Liga. They could do with translating that form into the UEFA Champions League (UCL) however, as the reigning champions have got work to do to seal their place in the knockout phase following a mixed campaign so far (W3, L3).
Defeat to AC Milan in November was their first European loss at the Bernabéu since April 2022, but Los Blancos haven’t lost consecutive UCL home fixtures in the same campaign since 2018/19. You have to go back to 1998/99 for the last time they hosted an Austrian side, thrashing Sturm Graz 6-1, and given their recent goalscoring exploits, a similar outcome against Salzburg can’t be ruled out.
While the visitors (W1, L5) can still qualify for the knockout phase, they are staring at the possibility of their European campaign being over before the Austrian league season resumes following the winter break. At least they’ll be fresh for this first-ever meeting with Madrid and Thomas Letsch’s first game in charge, as he took over from Pep Lijnders last month.
He’ll be hoping for better fortunes than his predecessor, as all five of those defeats saw Salzburg fail to score and concede at least twice, although they’ve lost just two of their last six UCL away matches (W2, D2). That might not help much here given the Red Bulls’ distinctly underwhelming record in Spain, where they’ve only won one of their 11 previous matches (D4, L6).
Players to watch: Vinícius Júnior didn’t face Las Palmas on Sunday due to suspension, so will be raring to add to his UCL tally of five goals this term, four of which arrived after the 55th minute. Oscar Gloukh has netted between the 35th and 40th minute inclusive in two of Salzburg’s last four matches, with all four of his club goalscoring appearances this season ending in victory.
Hot stat: Salzburg are yet to score before first-half stoppage time in the UCL league phase this term.
THE MATCH WILL BE LIVE FIVE (5) MINUTES BEFORE KICK OFF
