Sparta Prague secured consecutive friendly wins to make up for their absence of competitive football due to a winter break, but face an uphill battle to salvage their UEFA Champions League (UCL) campaign. Starting matchday seven outside the top-24 (W1, D1, L4), Iron Sparta need wins against Inter Milan here and Bayer Leverkusen next matchday to have any chance of progressing to the knockout stages.
Recent signs aren’t promising as 14 defeats from their last 20 UCL matches (W1, D5) including the last four in a row put them at risk of losing five on the bounce in this competition for the first time ever! There’s little doubt that defensive frailties played a significant role in that disappointing record, as Sparta conceded 17 goals across their last four UCL matches, forming part of their worst defensive campaign (GA18) in this competition since 1999/2000.
Inter lost 1-0 to Leverkusen on matchday six, as they both conceded and lost for the first time in this UCL campaign (W4, D1). But that defeat shouldn’t overly concern the Nerazzurri, who’ve won seven of their last nine competitive matches since (D1, L1) and are in full control of their potential automatic progression to round of 16, although six goals conceded in the recent four matches in that sequence is cause for some concern.
Inter can at least take confidence from the fact they’ve won each of their last three UCL matches against opponents from the Czech Republic, scoring nine and conceding just once. Their recent away form is near-impeccable too, as the visitors won seven of their last eight competitive trips without conceding (L1) either side of that Leverkusen reverse.
Players to watch: Victor Olatunji will be raring to resume competitive action after goals in each of Sparta’s two friendlies, whilst also scoring their first goal with four of his last five competitive strikes, three of which arrived inside the opening 15 minutes. Whilst Lautaro Martínez tends to take his time to score, with seven of his last nine goals for Inter coming after the break.
Hot stat: Five of Sparta’s last six UCL matches saw the match opening goal scored in the 15th minute or earlier.
THE MATCH WILL BE LIVE FIVE (5) MINUTES BEFORE KICK OFF
