Matchday seven of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) throws up some intriguing ties, but there are perhaps none bigger than this ‘El Cashico’ between two of the richest clubs in the world. Money hasn’t been able to buy PSG success in this competition as they’re still yet to win it, and they’ve got a battle on their hands to even reach the knockout stages this term, as they come into this clash outside the top-24.

This is the one trophy the Parisians are desperate to get their hands on, but just one win from their last seven European outings against Manchester City suggests that their hopes of advancing will take another hit here (D2, L4). Nine wins from their last 12 home games in all competitions would suggest that won’t be the case (D2, L1), but three defeats from their last five UCL home games indicates that they struggle against Europe’s elite (W1, D1).

City start this round just three places above PSG and have been enduring similar struggles. They’re without a win in their last three UCL games (D1, L2) and haven’t posted a longer winless run in this competition in the same edition since 2014, but if the 2022/23 champions are going to replicate that success, they’ll have to do it the hard way as they’re all but assured to miss out on a direct ticket to the last 16.

Unthinkably, City could still yet be knocked out of the competition at the first hurdle, a stage they haven’t fallen at since 2012/13. An away game certainly doesn’t offer them much hope of steering clear of the bottom-12 here considering they’ve lost their last two UCL road trips by multiple-goal margins, while Pep Guardiola’s two personal away H2Hs against a Luis Enrique-managed side both ended in 3+ goal margin defeats ‘to nil’.

Key battle: Ahead of matchay seven, no player in the UCL had completed more passes than PSG’s Marquinhos’ 525, giving him an average of 88 per game. He’ll be more worried about containing Erling Haaland here than passing, as the Norwegian scored a second-half brace the last time he lined up against the Brazilian.

Hot stat: Only two of PSG’s last eight UCL games saw both teams score.
