There’ll be a new, yet familiar, look to Everton going forward, with former manager David Moyes making his return as boss this past weekend, replacing Sean Dyche who was sacked hours before Thursday’s 2-0 FA Cup win over Peterborough United. Moyes managed Everton for more than 500 matches from 2002 to 2013 and guided the club to the 2009 FA Cup final, while also delivering four European campaigns.
He returns to a much different Everton than the one he left 12 years ago, with the Toffees in poor form and just a point clear of the bottom three ahead of the round. A big issue that Moyes will need to address is the lack of goals his team have been delivering, with blanks drawn in eight of their past ten league outings (W1, D5, L4).
While Aston Villa will be wary of a potential ‘new manager bounce’, they travel to Merseyside in solid form, losing just one of their last five competitive games (W3, D1). They have also dominated the H2Hs between these two of late, avoiding defeat in each of the past 11 league meetings between the pair (W8, D3) and keeping a clean sheet on their last three visits to Goodison Park.
Such positivity has been in short supply on the road of late for Unai Emery’s men, with Villa coming into this clash on the back of five successive away league defeats. They’re also without a league clean sheet on the road for 11 matches stretching back to April at Arsenal - something that should give the misfiring home team some hope.
Players to watch: With forwards Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Armando Broja and Youssef Chermiti all potentially unavailable due to injury, Everton will look to Beto to step up. His goal against Peterborough meant he’s scored in two of his past three starts for club and country. Former Toffee Ross Barkley has lost just one of his nine H2Hs (W4, D4) against his former club, while he assisted Villa’s winning goal in September’s reverse H2H (3-2).
Hot stat: Moyes has lost just seven personal H2Hs against Aston Villa (W13, D14), his fewest against any of the nine sides he’s faced 25+ occasions.
