The Europa-Park Stadion has been something of a fortress for Freiburg so far this season in the league (W6, D1, L1) and Julian Schuster’s side will be hoping to add a seventh win when Bundesliga pace-setters Bayern Munich visit on Saturday. Three defeats from their last four games (W1) suggests that’ll be a tall order, but they still sit firmly in the European race.

All three of those defeats have come in away matches, but with ten goals conceded from their three games in 2025 so far, that negative form risks transferring into their home games. That’s been a long-standing theme throughout the campaign, as you’d have to go back to the 2011/12 season to find the last time Freiburg had conceded 34 goals from their opening 18 league games.

Bayern aren’t watertight at the back themselves, as shown by a 3-0 UEFA Champions League defeat at Feyenoord on Wednesday which followed a 3-2 home win over Wolfsburg at the weekend. Recent visits to Freiburg have also lacked defensive strength as the league leaders have returned south with a clean sheet in only two of their last ten away H2Hs (W5, D4, L1).

Vincent Kompany’s team won’t worry about history as they are currently top of the Bundesliga on 45 points, their highest return after 18 games since the 2016/17 campaign, while their 56 goals scored is a figure which has only been bettered at this stage by Bayern themselves in 2021/22. They won the title in both of those seasons and if they can stretch their unbeaten Bundesliga record against Freiburg to 18 matches (W13, D4) this weekend, the Bavarians should be another step closer to lifting the trophy again this May.

Players to watchRitsu Doan has contributed to a goal in each of Freiburg’s last three home games (G1, A2) but will be keen to break a drought of seven H2Hs in league and cup against Bayern without a goal or an assist. Someone with a far stronger H2H record is Serge Gnabry who has been involved in five goals (G2, A3) across his last four Bundesliga meetings.

Hot stat: Freiburg have failed to keep a second half clean sheet in any of their last nine games.
