After winning his first two games in charge of Wolves ‘to nil’, Vitor Pereira’s honeymoon period is well and truly over after a 3-1 defeat at Chelsea on Monday night stretched their winless Premier League run to four matches (D1, L3). The Old Gold are also enduring a turbulent January off the pitch as the club continue to fend off interest in talisman Matheus Cunha, with one of his rumoured suitors Arsenal the next visitors to Molineux.
That presents a big problem for a side only out of the relegation zone on goal difference, as Wolves have lost each of the last seven league H2Hs. They’ve also desperately struggled against the division’s better teams this term, avoiding defeat just once in 11 matches against sides starting the round in the top-eight (D1, L10) - a record that must change considering their next four league fixtures are against such sides!
Despite remaining unbeaten in each of their last 12 Premier League matches (W7, D5), Arsenal’s bid for a first title in over two decades once again finds itself on the ropes after they threw away a two-goal lead against Aston Villa last week (D 2-2). Mikel Arteta’s men at least responded emphatically in midweek, cruising to a 3-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb in the UEFA Champions League.
The Gunners hit the road looking to replicate that defensive solidity and keep a first away league clean sheet in ten attempts (W3, D4, L2). If they do slip up at the back, Arsenal’s forward line are unlikely to be fazed given that they’ve scored in each of the last 34 meetings with Wolves across all competitions dating back to 1979 - their longest such streak against any opponent in club history.
Key battle: Former Tottenham defender Matt Doherty will be keen to get one over on his old North London rivals - he scored in a 3-1 Wolves win in this fixture back in 2018/19. Arsenal have seen a league-high seven goals scored by defenders this season, but the hosts ought to be wary of Leandro Trossard, who’s directly contributed to career-high eight Premier League goals against Wolves (G2, A6).
Hot stat: Wolves have only lost their first four league games of a calendar year twice, but on both occasions the fourth defeat came against Arsenal!
