After a brief pause to allow for the third round of the FA Cup, the Premier League returns with a midweek round, with Chelsea and Bournemouth among the first to take to the stage. The Blues beat Morecambe 5-0 in cup action over the weekend, although a repeat scoreline seems unlikely against an in-form Cherries side, especially as that win broke a four-match winless run for Enzo Maresca’s side (D2, L2).

All four of those winless outings were in the league, so Chelsea fans would be forgiven for not getting carried away by their hefty win against League Two opposition. They do look good value to snap their Premier League spiral here though, as not only have they beaten Bournemouth in four of the last five H2Hs (D1), but they’re unbeaten in Tuesday-held Premier League home games since January 2002 (W10, D4)!

Bournemouth represent a stern challenge to that imperious record and the south coast side travel on the back of a heavy win of their own after they dispatched Championship West Brom 5-1 on Saturday. That stretched their impressive unbeaten run to nine games in all competitions (W6, D3), although strangely all three draws came against sides from the capital, so a trip to West London may not be as fruitful as they’d hope.

An away game should at the very least bear fruit in front of goal though, as Andoni Iraola’s side have netted at least twice in their last five away league games (W3, D1, L1). They may be more likely to add to that win column away to Chelsea than they would be at home strangely, with Bournemouth one of just four sides in history to win more Premier League games away to Chelsea (three) than they have at home (+one).

Players to watchChristopher Nkunku struck Chelsea’s winner in the reverse fixture, a strike which means that seven of his last eight club goals have arrived after half-time. Justin Kluivert has scored four times across Bournemouth’s last four away league games and all four goals came from the penalty spot.

Hot stat: Only two of 11 historical Chelsea-held H2Hs have seen both teams score.
