Saudi Arabia plays host to the 41st edition of the Supercopa de España, the fifth of six years since moving to a four-team format that has been held on Saudi soil. Beating Mallorca in their semi-final, Carlo Ancelotti’s 13-time Supercopa winners Real Madrid can now match Barcelona’s all-time record with victory, and momentum seems to be in Real’s favour.

The capital club are currently marginally better-placed than their Catalan opponents to mount a title challenge in La Liga, and Ancelotti’s personal record against Barcelona is similarly balanced on a knife-edge (W10, D3, L10), highlighting the competitive nature of this clash. Rarely are these hard-fought battles between these two old rivals dull though, with six of the last eight Supercopa finals between the pair producing at least two goals before half-time, whilst each of the last four were also settled with multi-goal margins.

Playing on far-flung shores hasn’t stopped 14-time champions Barcelona from reaching a third-straight final following a comfortable 2-0 victory over Athletic Club in the semi-final. That win secured Barcelona back-to-back wins across all competitions for the first time since November, and considering both games saw the Catalan club secure a clean sheet, a solid rearguard may again be their route to success here.

Claiming bragging rights over their rivals would be a psychological boost for Barcelona, who travel here arguably needing a break having relinquished their control over the title race in the last five La Liga rounds (W1, D1, L3). This will be the 17th Supercopa final played between these sides, but with Barcelona coming up trumps on just one of the last five such occasions, Hansi Flick’s men might enter this with some trepidation.

Players to watch: Semi-final scorer Rodrygo put the cherry on the cake with the fourth goal in last year’s 4-1 final win, which was his sixth goal contribution across 13 H2Hs against Barcelona (G2, A4). Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski scored twice in four of his last six goalscoring appearances, a run which began with a brace in his side’s 4-0 rout of Real in the latest league H2H

Hot stat: Eight of the last ten Supercopa H2Hs saw both teams score and over 3.5 total goals.
