The winter break probably came at just the wrong time for Holstein Kiel. The Storks looked like they had finally kick-started their season when ending a five-match losing streak by dishing out a 5-1 hammering to Augsburg before Christmas, only to be beaten 3-2 by Freiburg at the weekend, despite a dramatic fightback in the final few minutes.
Captain Lewis Holtby admitted that result left him with a “bitter” feeling, and it ultimately means Marcel Rapp’s side are marooned inside the Bundesliga relegation zone, six points from safety as the half way stage of the campaign approaches. Fans will be fearing an immediate return to the second tier, but may take some comfort from being back on home soil, where Holstein Kiel have picked up each of their two league victories this season.
History suggests another win is unlikely in this fixture though, as they have lost both previous H2Hs with opponents Borussia Dortmund, conceding nine goals and failing to score in the process! The visitors will be hoping that serves as a good omen, given they arrive at Holstein-Stadion on a run of just one win from their last six outings across all competitions (D3, L2).
The most recent of those was a 3-2 reversal to Bayer Leverkusen on Friday night, with manager Nuri Şahin criticising his defence for being “far too easy” to attack against. The Prussians have now dropped outside of the European qualification places, and a run of only one win from their last nine away league fixtures (D2, L6) suggests they might struggle to climb the table in this clash.
Players to watch: Holstein Kiel’s Phil Harres has scored four goals across his last two games, with 12 of his last 14 strikes coming after half-time. Serhou Guirassy will pose a huge threat going forward for Dortmund, and he has only lost three of the last 23 Bundesliga games in which he has scored (W19, D1), albeit each of those defeats have come this season, including against Leverkusen on Friday!
Hot stat: 13 of Borussia Dortmund’s last 14 league games have seen both teams score.
