Real Valladolid’s 2-1 defeat to fellow La Liga strugglers Espanyol in the last round must have felt like a hammer blow to their survival chances as they ended the last matchday five points from safety and now have the daunting task of hosting reigning champions Real Madrid. It’s a match-up that does them no favours as they haven’t even scored in any of the last six H2Hs, all of which ended in defeat!
The White and Violets have at least won their last two home league games, each via a 1-0 scoreline, so there is hope for Diego Cocca’s side, even if they last avoided a H2H defeat here back in May 2014 (L4). Preparations for this clash haven’t been helped by uncertainty surrounding whether players will be sold in the coming weeks to raise funds as the January window nears its conclusion.
There are no such worries for Real Madrid, who ended the last matchday top of La Liga as Atlético Madrid and Barcelona dropped points before they hammered Las Palmas 4-1. There were early whistles at the Bernabéu as they went behind but Kylian Mbappé inspired a comeback which they then followed up by beating Salzburg 5-1 in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti has faced more speculation about his future as some reports claimed he will depart at the season’s end, which he denied, joking he might leave when Florentino Pérez ends his latest four-year term as president in 2029. For now, his focus is guiding Los Blancos to another strong performance having lost just one of their last 25 La Liga away games (W15, D9).
Key battle: Valladolid captain Javier Sánchez equalised against Espanyol last weekend, but the centre-back can expect to be busy in defence as he faces the club where he started his career. He played alongside Brahim Díaz for Madrid’s reserves, so he’ll know about the danger he poses, especially after Díaz contributed to seven goals across his last eight home league games (G4, A3).
Hot stat: Six of the last seven H2Hs were goalless at half-time.
