Reigning Dutch champions PSV have work to do after losing the first leg of their UEFA Champions League (UCL) knockout play-off 2-1 to Juventus last week, the second time they’ve been defeated by the Italian side this term. History is firmly against PSV here, who have failed to progress from eight of their previous 11 European Cup/UCL knockout stage ties when losing the first leg, with the last exception coming in 1989/90.

Their current form doesn't boost their chances either as PSV have won just once since the start of February (D3, L1) and a run of three consecutive league draws, surrendering the lead in each, has cost them top spot in the Eredivisie. PSV’s UCL home form does provide some hope as they’ve won their last three European outings at Philips Stadion, including against Liverpool, whilst scoring ten goals in that run!

Juventus have put together a winning streak of their own of late, which they stretched to four games for the first time this season after beating Inter Milan 1-0 in the Derby d’Italia on Sunday evening. If that wasn’t enough to breed confidence, then the Bianconeri’s record of progressing from their last 20 European Cup/UCL ties when winning the first leg surely will, with their last failure coming back in 1978/79.

Following their win last week, Juventus could win both legs of a UCL knockout tie for the first time since 2016/17 and become only the sixth side to win three UCL matches against the same opponent in a single campaign in the competition’s history. Just two wins across their last ten competitive trips (D7, L1) casts doubt over their chances of making history, and with their last two UCL away matches ending 0-0, this could even turn out to be a drab affair.

Players to watch: PSV’s Ivan Perišić netted his fifth career goal against Juventus in the first leg, with all five coming after half-time. After scoring the winner against Inter, Francisco Conceição has now scored all five of his goals for Juventus beyond the 70th minute, with all five coming in victories.

Hot stat: Juventus have scored seven goals beyond the hour mark in their last four competitive matches.
