Aston Villa stumbled again as they were held to a 1-1 draw on home soil by relegation-threatened Ipswich Town in the Premier League. Not only did that latest result make it four Premier League games without victory for Villa (D3, L1), but it also means that the home side enter this midweek clash with Liverpool sat ninth and six points outside of the UEFA Champions League qualification spots.

Unai Emery’s side at least continue to be very difficult to beat on home soil, underlined by a period of 12 consecutive league matches without defeat at Villa Park (W6, D6). That resilience will have to be on show again if they’re to get anything out of this clash with the league leaders, a side they’ve beaten just once across the last 14 league H2Hs (D2, L11).

That H2H record means that Liverpool should once again travel in high spirits, especially after they fended off a potential Wolves comeback on Sunday to win 2-1 and maintain their seven-point gap to Arsenal at the top of the Premier League. Even though the Reds were far from their best in that match and failed to register a shot in one half of a Premier League game at Anfield for the first time on record, Arne Slot’s side still did enough to claim their 18th league win of the season.

Next up, the visitors will look to book another victory at Villa Park, the venue at which they have picked up more victories (43) and scored more goals at (160) across all competitions than any other outside of Anfield. With an ongoing 21-match unbeaten run in the Premier League under their belt (W14, D7), adding to those tallies here looks likely.

Players to watch: Ollie Watkins has only scored more Premier League goals against Brighton (seven) and Arsenal (six) than he has against Liverpool (five). Liverpool’s Luis Díaz took his tally to nine league goals at the weekend, his best ever seasonal return in the competition.

Hot stat: Aston Villa lost six of their last seven Premier League games against sides starting the day top of the table (W1).
