Just as it looked like Manchester City had turned a corner with a 6-0 win against Ipswich Town in the Premier League last weekend, Pep Guardiola’s men were then brought back down to earth in midweek with a 4-2 UEFA Champions League defeat to PSG. That game again highlighted their recent inability to see out matches, as despite leading 2-0 early in the second half, the Citizens again capitulated, making that nine losses after being ahead in all competitions this season - the most of any English top-flight side.
What will serve as a confidence boost at least ahead of the weekend is the fact that City are unbeaten in their last ten fixtures against Chelsea (W8, D2), while the big-money signing of Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt is expected to give them more potency up top. The hosts have however lost their last three Premier League games played immediately after a midweek European clash, so will be hoping that there isn’t another hangover here.
After failing to win five straight league encounters either side of the new year (D3, L2), Chelsea finally returned to form at Stamford Bridge on Monday night as they beat relegation-threatened Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1, giving the Blues’ top-four chances a much-needed shot in the arm. They actually come into this clash above their hosts - the latest into a Premier League campaign that Chelsea are facing Manchester City while above them in the table since 2016-17!
They’ll arrive in Manchester knowing that defeat will see City leapfrog them in the table though, so head coach Enzo Maresca will be desperate to avoid that fate here. That could be easier said than done, as Chelsea have kept just one clean sheet in their last 19 away H2Hs, with the Londoners failing to score on ten of those occasions.
Players to watch: Kevin De Bruyne has scored five Premier League goals against his former side, only netting more against Arsenal in the competition (eight). Cole Palmer is also facing his old club here and could strike early for Chelsea, as each of his last three league goals have served as match openers inside 20 minutes.
Hot stat: Manchester City have scored in both halves in 11 of their 21 Premier League games this season - a joint league-high tally ahead of the weekend.
