Following a short hiatus from Premier League action to progress in both domestic club competitions, Newcastle return to league action looking to continue their scintillating run of form. Five of their current run of eight straight wins came in the league and represent as many victories as they had put together across the opening 15 rounds (W5, D5, L5), meaning that the top-four hopefuls can now post a sixth straight league win for the first time since 2022.
Doing so may be easier said than done as whilst the Magpies have won their last two home league games, they went on to draw 1-1 on each of the three prior occasions when they managed back-to-back home league wins since the beginning of 2024. Another stalemate wouldn’t actually be too surprising in this fixture as the 11 draws from 19 Premier League H2Hs against Wolves (W6, L2) is the highest draw rate of any fixture to be played 15+ times in the competition.
After defeat in the reverse fixture, relegation-threatened Wolves are at risk of a losing league double against Newcastle for the first time in over a century (1905/06). That will be the least of their worries as whilst the FA Cup provided a bit of escapism over the weekend, downing Championship side Bristol City 2-1, Vítor Pereira must snap back to reality as he looks to pull the Black Country club away from the drop zone by continuing his positive start to league life at the club (W2, D1, L1).
Aiding them in that goal will be the £16.6m signing of centre-back Emmanuel Agbadou, Pereira’s first at the club. Shoring up the defence is a key priority for Wolves, especially on the road, as they’ve managed to keep just one clean sheet on their travels since doing so against lower league opponents in last January’s FA Cup. Wolves have also never kept a clean sheet in nine Premier League visits to St James’ Park.
Players to watch: Newcastle defender Fabian Schär has faced Wolves more often than any other side in his career without ever losing (W4, D4), contributing to three goals and picking up three bookings along the way. Also returning from suspension ahead of this, Wolves’ Matheus Cunha scored the majority of his ten Premier League goals this season away from home.
Hot stat: Wolves have failed to win over half their league games when scoring first this season (W3, D1, L3).
